Vern Buchanan has represented Florida's Gulf Coast in Congress since 2007, currently serving Florida's 16th Congressional District as Vice Chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee and Chairman of its Health Subcommittee. Before entering politics, Buchanan built a business empire spanning automotive dealerships and more than 50 companies, and he led both the Florida Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce. Buchanan announced on January 27, 2026, that he will retire at the end of the 119th Congress after 20 years in the U.S. House.
