Senate battlegrounds in Georgia, Michigan, and Maine determine which party controls the chamber in 2027
Nine Senate seats are rated as battleground races heading into November 2026. Democrats defend seats in Georgia (Jon Ossoff) and Michigan β€” both states Trump won in 2024. Republicans defend a seat in Maine (Susan Collins), a state Kamala Harris won. Democrats must hold all their seats and flip four Republican-held seats to take the majority. As of March 2026, four Senate Democrats and six Senate Republicans announced they would not seek re-election, opening additional competitive contests in Alabama, North Carolina, and Iowa.

Helene turns inland flooding into Biden’s largest 2024 disaster response
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida and drove catastrophic flooding into Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia in late September 2024. NOAA reported that Helene and Milton together caused more than $100 billion in combined damage across the Southeast. President Joe Biden approved major disaster declarations for North Carolina, Florida, South Carolina and Georgia, while state officials warned that recovery in western North Carolina would take years.

North Carolina becomes 40th state to expand Medicaid 600,000 residents gain coverage
North Carolina, historically one of the most resistant Southern states to Medicaid expansion, officially begins enrolling residents in expanded Medicaid coverage under the ACA, becoming the 40th state to do so. North Carolina's expansion covers adults earning up to 138% of the federal poverty level, extending coverage to approximately 600,000 uninsured residents. The expansion, enacted by the Republican-controlled state legislature, is celebrated by the Biden administration as evidence of Medicaid expansion's broad support. With North Carolina joining, the number of uninsured Americans continues falling toward a historic low. South Dakota follows in July 2023, and Idaho completes its expansion in January 2024.
