Salud Ortiz Carbajal represents California's 24th Congressional District, covering Santa Barbara County and parts of San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties. Born November 18, 1964, in Moroleon, Guanajuato, Mexico, Carbajal immigrated to the United States as a child with his family, settling in Oxnard, California, where his father worked as a farmworker. He served eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve (1984-1992), including activation during the Gulf War. After earning a B.A. from UC Santa Barbara (1990) and an M.A. in organizational management from Fielding Graduate University (1994), Carbajal worked for Santa Barbara County Supervisor Naomi Schwartz from 1993 to 2004. He won election to the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors in 2004, serving the 1st District for twelve years. First elected to Congress in 2016 after Rep. Lois Capps retired, Carbajal is now serving his fifth term. He sits on the House Armed Services, Agriculture, and Transportation and Infrastructure committees. In 2018, he received the Carnegie Corporation's Great Immigrants Award.
