UN commission cites Netanyahu and Herzog statements as genocide evidence
The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israeli authorities committed acts that may constitute genocide in Gaza in a detailed report. The commission documented several acts defined under the 1948 Genocide Convention, including widespread killings, deliberate starvation affecting Palestinians, and systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure. The report cited statements by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as evidence of genocidal intent. The commission urged states to halt arms transfers to Israel and called on UN bodies to take action. Israel's Foreign Ministry dismissed the findings as politically motivated.
US eases Belavia sanctions after Belarus frees prisoners
On August 11, 2022, Belarus released 52 political prisoners, including veteran opposition figure Mikola Statkevich and journalist Ihar Losik, to Lithuania. This followed direct appeals by U.S. President Joe Biden. In return, the U.S. lifted certain Treasury and export restrictions on Belavia, Belarus’s state airline, enabling it to service and buy components for its Boeing fleet. Human Rights Watch warned that detainees at Okrestina detention center have faced torture and ill-treatment. The European Union maintained its wider sanctions on Belarus, with officials cautioning that U.S. relief risks undermining cohesive Western pressure against Lukashenko’s regime.
HBCUs locked down after threats following Charlie Kirk assassination
At least seven historically Black colleges and universities went into lockdown on September 11, 2025, one day after conservative activist Charlie Kirk was fatally shot at Utah Valley University. Alabama State, Virginia State, Hampton, Southern University, Bethune-Cookman, Clark Atlanta, and Spelman College received what the FBI called "hoax threat calls." The FBI stated there was "no information to indicate a credible threat" but mobilized multiple field offices. Southern University canceled all classes through the weekend. The threats forced thousands of Black students to shelter in place while authorities swept campuses for explosives that were never found.
K.P. Sharma Oli resigns as Nepal protesters storm parliament
K.P. Sharma Oli resigned as Nepal's Prime Minister on September 9, 2025, after Gen Z protesters stormed parliament and torched government buildings following a deadly police crackdown. Security forces killed 19 people on September 8 when protesters defied a government-imposed social media ban and marched on parliament demanding an end to corruption. The next day, tens of thousands breached police barriers, set fire to the Federal Parliament Building, Supreme Court, Prime Minister's residence, and homes of political leaders. Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim Prime Minister on September 12, becoming Nepal's first female head of government. The protests, dubbed the "Gen Z uprising," were triggered by viral videos of politicians' children flaunting luxury lifestyles while youth unemployment reached 33%.
