Trump imposes $100,000 fee on new H-1B skilled worker visas
President Trump signed a proclamation requiring employers to pay $100,000 per petition for H-1B specialty worker visas filed after September 21, 2025. The rule exempts workers with approved petitions or physically present in the U.S. as of the effective date and applies only to new filings. The proclamation also unveiled $1 million gold card and $5 million platinum card programs offering expedited permanent residency for wealthy applicants. Major firms including Microsoft, Amazon and JPMorgan advised H-1B employees abroad to return before the effective date to avoid complications. Critics warn the high fee deters skilled talent and increases startup costs while supporters argue it protects American workers.
Musk warns violence at UK far-right rally
On September 13, 2025, Elon Musk addressed the 'Unite the Kingdom' rally in central London via video link, calling for the dissolution of Parliament and an early election to remove the Starmer government. He told the crowd 'violence is coming to you' and 'you either fight back or you die,' remarks condemned by Prime Minister Keir Starmer as 'dangerous and inflammatory.' The far-right march, organized by Tommy Robinson, drew estimates ranging from 110,000 to 150,000 participants and saw violent clashes that left 26 police officers injured—with 4 sustaining serious injuries including broken teeth, a possible broken nose, a concussion, and a spinal injury—and at least 25 people arrested. Simultaneous counter-protests by Stand Up To Racism and local anti-fascist groups attracted around 5,000 demonstrators.
