Evaluate continuity and change in U.S. government, politics, and civic issues throughout U.S. history, including those related to the powers of government, interpretations of founding documents, voting trends, citizenship, civil liberties, and civil rights.
Louisiana's 2022 social studies standards, implemented beginning 2023-24, include a dedicated full-year high school Civics course — one of only a few states requiring more than a semester of civics. The course covers constitutional origins and key compromises, US government structure and functions, rights and liberties, political participation, and Louisiana-specific civic institutions. Standards are organized into content anchor standards applied progressively from kindergarten through high school, with Louisiana and US history integrated at every grade level. The LEAP Civics assessment (operational 2024-25) measures mastery of these standards and provides accountability data on student readiness in civics and government.
