West Virginia High School Civics Standards

West Virginia's 2024 College- and Career-Readiness Standards for Social Studies include a Civics strand with 25 standards covering founding principles, constitutional framework, individual rights and civil liberties, political systems and processes, legal structures, and international relations. High school students must complete both a US History course and a separate Civics (or AP Government and Politics) course. Senate Bill 636 requires passing two exit assessments: a cumulative American history exam (taken at the end of the final US History course) and a USCIS-based civics exam (taken at the end of the Civics course), both required for graduation. Grade 8 students additionally take the Golden Horseshoe online exam on West Virginia and US history.
