Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act authorizes the Department of Homeland Security to enter agreements with state and local law enforcement agencies, training and deputizing their officers to perform immigration enforcement functions. Officers in the program can identify, detain, and process immigrants for removal proceedings. The program was significantly expanded under the Trump administration starting in 2025, with DHS paying participating agencies for vehicles, equipment, and officer salaries.
