Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states that an armed attack against one or more NATO members shall be considered an attack against all members. Each member then decides what action to take, which may or may not include military force. This collective defense principle was invoked only once in NATO's history—on September 12, 2001, following the 9/11 attacks.
