Diego Garcia is an atoll in the British Indian Ocean Territory hosting a major joint U.S.-UK military installation. It sits roughly 2,200 miles from Iran and is home to B-2 and B-52 bombers, nuclear submarines, and pre-positioned military equipment. The United States and United Kingdom share operational control under a 1966 treaty. The base was used for strikes during the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In 2024, Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed to transfer sovereignty of the surrounding Chagos Islands to Mauritius while retaining the Diego Garcia base under a long-term lease, a deal the Trump administration strongly opposed.
