An extrajudicial killing is a death caused by state agents outside any judicial process, such as an arrest, charge, or trial. International human rights law generally prohibits it outside the narrow circumstances of armed conflict. Whether a killing is lawful often turns on whether a true armed conflict exists or whether the person was instead a criminal suspect entitled to due process.
