The longest government shutdown in U.S. history ends after 43 days
The House voted 222-209 to reopen the government, and President Trump signed the funding bill that night, ending a 43-day shutdown that began Oct. 1. The standoff centered on expiring Affordable Care Act subsidies. Because the lapse left the Labor Department unfunded, it had already stopped the Census Bureau from collecting the October household survey, unlike the 2018-19 shutdown that spared a funded BLS.
