Biden reverses Trump transgender military ban on Day 5

President Biden signs an executive order reversing Trump's ban on transgender individuals serving in the US military. The order restores the policy in effect before the Trump administration's June 2017 tweet announcing the ban. Approximately 15,000 transgender service members had been serving under the pre-ban policy. The order directs the military to welcome transgender individuals, allow them to serve in their gender identity, and provide necessary medical care. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin implements the order immediately. The reversal is part of Biden's Day 1 executive actions, alongside the LGBTQ+ non-discrimination executive order and the Muslim travel ban revocation.
