Trump tweets four Black and Muslim congresswomen should go back to their home countries
On July 14, 2019, President Trump posts a series of tweets telling four Democratic congresswomen — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) — to "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came." Three of the four — Ocasio-Cortez, Tlaib, and Pressley — were born in the United States. Omar, born in Somalia, became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000. Trump writes: "Why don't they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came? Then come back and show us how it is done. These places need your help badly, you can't leave fast enough." The tweets are widely condemned by Democrats and some Republicans as racist. House Republicans block a resolution to formally censure Trump for the tweets. The House votes 240-187 on July 16 to formally condemn the remarks. The tweets directly precede "Send her back" chants at Trump's July 17 Greenville, NC rally targeting Omar specifically.
