Education Department cancels $1 billion in school mental health grants
The Education Department notified 223 grantees on April 29, 2025, that it would not renew approximately $1 billion in mental health awards created by the 2022 Bipartisan Safer Communities Act after the Uvalde shooting. The April 29 letter from Murray Bessette cited conflict with administration priorities and flagged DEI components. The cancellation terminated funding for 14,000 mental health professionals in training across K-12 schools in nearly every state.
