Arizona jury convicts Ernesto Miranda of rape and kidnapping based primarily on a confession his attorney argued he did not know he could refuse to give

An Arizona jury convicted Ernesto Miranda of rape and kidnapping on June 27, 1963, after a one-day trial in Maricopa County Superior Court. Defense attorney Alvin Moore objected to admission of the written confession, arguing Miranda had not been advised of his right to counsel before signing it. Judge Yale McFate overruled the objection and allowed the confession into evidence. Miranda was sentenced to 20-30 years on each count.
