CFPB Shut Down and USAID Reduced to Skeleton Crew Under DOGE Direction
Acting CFPB Director Russell Vance, installed by Trump, ordered staff to stop nearly all supervisory and enforcement work and directed employees to work from home indefinitely, effectively suspending the bureau's consumer protection mission. Simultaneously, USAID was reduced from approximately 10,000 employees to under 300 after DOGE personnel arrived at headquarters and Musk declared the agency "beyond repair" on social media. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was named acting USAID administrator as the administration sought to fold the agency into State.
