Trump signs EO 13768 targeting all undocumented immigrants and sanctuary cities
President Trump signed Executive Order 13768, "Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States," on January 25, 2017, designating all undocumented immigrants as enforcement priorities regardless of criminal history and directing DHS to withhold federal grants from sanctuary jurisdictions. The order expanded the 287(g) program and ordered ICE to hire an additional 10,000 agents. A federal court issued a nationwide preliminary injunction in April 2017, ruling the funding threat violated the Fifth and Tenth Amendments; more than 300 jurisdictions publicly refused to comply.
