Leaked Kennedy Center memo contradicts Trump claims of dramatic renovation

An internal Kennedy Center email obtained by NPR on February 19, 2026 described upcoming renovations as primarily cosmetic — new seating, marble armrests, carpeting, and stage flooring in the Concert Hall, plus HVAC and electrical upgrades — contradicting President Trump's public statements that the arts complex required a complete rebuilding due to its dilapidated and dangerous condition. The memo, sent February 2 by the Friends of the Kennedy Center director to tour leaders, noted that the Grand Foyer carpeting had been replaced just two years earlier without disrupting performances. Trump had announced a two-year shutdown of the center and claimed the steel structure would be fully exposed during renovation.
