Biden signs Pregnant Workers Fairness Act requires employers to accommodate pregnant workers

As part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2023, President Biden signs the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) and the PUMP for Nursing Mothers Act into law. The PWFA requires employers with 15 or more employees to provide reasonable temporary accommodations for pregnant workers, such as light duty, schedule modifications, more frequent breaks, and seating, that they do not currently have to provide under existing law. The PUMP Act extends lactation break time protections to millions of workers previously excluded, including salaried and exempt employees. Together the laws close significant gaps in workplace protections for pregnant and nursing workers, a priority for women's rights advocates for over 20 years.
