United States rejoins Paris Climate Agreement 107 days after Trump withdrew

The United States formally rejoins the Paris Climate Agreement, 107 days after President Trump's withdrawal took effect in November 2020. Biden had signed the executive order to begin the rejoining process on his first day in office, January 20. The US rejoining the accord is celebrated by European allies and climate advocates worldwide. Biden simultaneously creates the position of Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, appointing former Secretary of State John Kerry, and the new White House National Climate Advisor position, filled by Gina McCarthy. The US rejoining commits it to submitting a new nationally determined contribution, its climate pledge, to cut emissions at least 50-52% below 2005 levels by 2030, a target Biden announces at the Leaders Summit on Climate in April 2021.
