Trump tells Reuters Republicans should not have to hold midterm elections
In a roughly 30-minute Oval Office interview with Reuters correspondent Steve Holland, President Donald Trump again raises the prospect of unnecessary elections. Expressing frustration that his party could lose the House or Senate in the November midterms, Trump notes the historical pattern of midterm losses and adds: \"It's some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don't win the midterms.\" He then claims his administration's accomplishments are so extensive that \"when you think of it, we shouldn't even have an election.\" Reuters notes there is no evidence to support that assertion and no legal mechanism for a president to cancel elections. Democracy Docket calls the remark \"the latest in a series of statements in which Trump treats elections not as a constitutional requirement, but as an obstacle.\" The statement comes nine days after Trump made similar comments at the House Republican retreat at the Kennedy Center.
