Senate defeats first Iran War Powers Resolution, 47-52

The Senate votes 47-52 to reject the first War Powers Resolution introduced by Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) to end U.S. military operations in Iran. All 47 Democrats vote in favor. Every Republican votes against. The margin mirrors party-line patterns on War Powers challenges brought during Trump's first term over U.S. military action in Yemen and the killing of Iranian General Qasem Soleimani in 2020. The vote is the first of a running series of War Powers challenges that Democrats force to the Senate floor. (Senate Roll Call, Mar. 4, 2026)
