Biden announces $30 billion Northeast Corridor rail investment from Infrastructure Law
The Biden administration announces the first major tranche of infrastructure law funding for passenger rail. This is $30 billion for Northeast Corridor improvements including repairs, modernization, and new bridges needed to reduce delays and increase train speeds between Washington and Boston. The Northeast Corridor is the most heavily traveled rail corridor in the US, carrying 700,000 passengers per day and suffering from decades of deferred maintenance that cause chronic delays. The investment is the largest for passenger rail since Amtrak's creation in 1971. Biden, who famously commuted daily by Amtrak from Delaware to Washington as a senator, calls it a personal priority.
