US Navy launches Operation Praying Mantis sinking or crippling much of Iran Gulf naval fleet

After an Iranian mine severely damages the USS Samuel B. Roberts frigate on April 14, the U.S. Navy responds with Operation Praying Mantis, a major surface warfare operation that sinks or destroys approximately half of Iran's operational naval fleet, including two oil platforms used as IRGC staging areas, two frigates, and several smaller vessels. It is the largest U.S. naval surface engagement since World War II. Iran's naval losses contribute to its decision to accept a ceasefire with Iraq in August 1988.
