Trump fires BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer after a weak jobs report

President Trump fired Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer hours after the agency reported just 73,000 July jobs and revised the prior two months down by 258,000. He accused her, without evidence, of manipulating the data. The Senate had confirmed her 86-8 in January 2024. Deputy Commissioner William Wiatrowski became acting commissioner, leaving the agency without a confirmed chief heading into the fall.
