National Academies of Sciences warns that federal funding cuts threaten the research enterprise underpinning US economic competitiveness

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine published an emergency statement warning that the combination of NIH grant terminations, NSF workforce reductions, and the elimination of DEI programs that support diverse recruitment was putting at risk the federally funded research enterprise that has underpinned US technological and economic leadership since World War II. The statement cited projections that the grant cancellations and workforce reductions would reduce the number of research projects in active execution by tens of thousands and delay or eliminate research in cancer biology, infectious disease, climate modeling, advanced computing, and materials science. The National Academies noted that the research infrastructure affected had taken decades to build and that its disruption would have consequences extending decades into the future.
