SEC sues Coinbase and Binance in landmark crypto enforcement actions

The SEC filed lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance, the two largest cryptocurrency exchanges, alleging they operated as unregistered securities exchanges. SEC Chair Gary Gensler argued most crypto tokens qualified as securities under the 1946 Howey Test. The industry responded that existing securities law was never designed for digital assets, accelerating calls for Congress to pass dedicated crypto legislation.
