Gun violence causes 48,204 deaths in 2022 second-highest total ever recorded
In 2022, 48,204 people died due to gun violence in the United States, the second-highest total ever recorded. The gun homicide rate decreased 7.5% from 2021, with 19,651 people killed by guns. However, gun suicides reached an all-time high, increasing by 2.7% to 27,032 deaths. Firearm-related injuries became the leading cause of death for children and adolescents aged 1-19 years. Assault-related violence accounts for 64% of firearm-related deaths in youths aged 10-19. States with more restrictive gun laws have lower rates of firearm-related mortality.
