Supreme Court unanimously rules social media companies cannot be held liable for aiding terrorism
The Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Twitter v. Taamneh that social media companies cannot be held liable for "aiding and abetting" terrorism under the Anti-Terrorism Act based on their typical daily activities of creating platforms and algorithms. The Court found a "lack of concrete nexus" between the tech companies and terrorist groups like ISIS. In a companion case, Gonzalez v. Google, the Court declined to address the scope of Section 230 immunity, remanding the case to the Ninth Circuit for consideration in light of the Twitter decision. The rulings preserved the legal status quo for online platform liability.
