Scientists Prove Fossil Fuels Killed 1,500 Europeans in 10-Day Heat Wave
Climate scientists published peer-reviewed attribution research on July 16, 2025, proving that fossil fuel emissions made a 10-day European heat wave at least 2.5 times more likely and increased peak temperatures by 2.4 degrees Celsius. The wave killed an estimated 1,500 people across France, Spain, and Portugal. Researchers from World Weather Attribution calculated that without human-caused warming, the heat wave would have been a once-in-200-year event rather than a once-in-15-year event.
