Karine Jean-Pierre becomes first Black and LGBTQ+ White House Press Secretary
Karine Jean-Pierre is appointed White House Press Secretary, replacing Jen Psaki. Jean-Pierre becomes the first Black person and the first openly LGBTQ+ individual to hold the position in the 73-year history of the White House press briefing room. Born in Martinique and raised in New York, Jean-Pierre previously served as Biden's Chief of Staff during the transition and as principal deputy press secretary. Her appointment reflects Biden's commitment to the most diverse White House staff in history. Jean-Pierre holds 306 press briefings over the course of the administration.
