Congress overrides Nixon veto 284-185 in House 75-18 in Senate War Powers Resolution becomes law

Congress overrides Nixon's veto of the War Powers Resolution by a two-thirds majority in both chambers, 284-185 in the House and 75-18 in the Senate, enacting Public Law 93-148. The law requires the president to notify Congress within 48 hours of committing armed forces to hostilities and prohibits forces from remaining more than 60 days without congressional authorization. The override margin reflects Nixon's political weakness following the Saturday Night Massacre and Watergate.
