FDR signs Emergency Conservation Work Act creating Civilian Conservation Corps

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed S. 598, the Emergency Conservation Work Act, on March 31, 1933, after Congress passed it by voice vote the same day. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6101 on April 5 creating the agency, soon known as the Civilian Conservation Corps. The program enrolled unemployed young men ages 18-25 for conservation labor at $30 monthly, with $22-25 sent home to families.
