DOJ Office of Professional Responsibility opens review of Acosta's Epstein non-prosecution agreement as victim consultation failures emerge
The Department of Justice Office of Professional Responsibility initiates a review of U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta's handling of the 2007 federal non-prosecution agreement with Jeffrey Epstein, following disclosure that the agreement was negotiated without notifying Epstein's identified victims as required by the Crime Victims' Rights Act. Internal DOJ emails later obtained through FOIA requests and congressional subpoenas document pressure from senior officials to resolve the case quickly and avoid a federal trial. The NPA immunized Epstein and unnamed co-conspirators from federal prosecution in exchange for a Florida state plea to two prostitution-related charges.
