National Association of Scholars launches Civics Alliance and begins distributing model K-12 civics legislation to state legislators
The National Association of Scholars formally launched the Civics Alliance in 2017, establishing a dedicated vehicle for distributing model K-12 civics and history legislation to state legislators across the country. The Alliance's model bills require instruction in Western civilization, U.S. founding documents, and what it calls "authentic civics education" — framing that emphasizes American exceptionalism and Western democratic traditions. The Civics Alliance operates on the ALEC model: draft template legislation, identify sympathetic legislators, provide talking points, and track state-by-state progress. By 2024, nearly identical Civics Alliance language had appeared in legislation introduced in more than 15 states.
