Biden signs the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first major federal gun safety law in 30 years
Biden signs the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law, the first major federal gun safety legislation since the 1994 assault weapons ban. The Senate passed the bill 65-33 on June 23, 2022, and the House passed it 234-193 the following day. The law closes the boyfriend loophole in background check requirements, strengthens checks for gun buyers under 21, funds state crisis intervention programs, and clarifies the definition of federally licensed firearms dealers. The legislation emerged after the Uvalde, Texas, elementary school shooting killed 19 children and two teachers on May 24, 2022.
