White supremacists overthrow Wilmington government and massacre Black residents

White supremacists attack Wilmington, North Carolina, on November 10, 1898, killing Black residents and forcing elected local officials from office. The violence follows a campaign of racist propaganda against Black political power and interracial Fusionist government. The attackers destroy the office of the Black-owned Daily Record newspaper and install white supremacist leadership in the city. A state commission later describes the event as a coup d'état and massacre. Racial violence overthrows a multiracial democratic government in the United States.
