Reagan Fires 11,345 Striking Air Traffic Controllers

President Reagan fired 11,345 air traffic controllers on Aug. 5, 1981, two days after their union, PATCO, launched an illegal strike for better pay and hours. He banned them from federal service for life. The mass firing broke the union and set the lasting precedent that air traffic controllers cannot strike.
