Public Citizen says 446 hospitals face closure risk from $911B Medicaid cuts
Public Citizen released an analysis on April 1, 2026, identifying 446 hospitals at high risk of closure or service cuts due to $911 billion in Medicaid and CHIP reductions enacted in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act signed July 4, 2025. To qualify as at-risk, hospitals had negative net profit margins from 2022 to 2024 and drew at least 20% of payer mix from Medicaid and CHIP. The 446 hospitals collectively hold 68,986 beds, served 6.6 million patients in 2024, and employ 275,458 patient care workers. At least one at-risk hospital exists in 44 states.
