Florida's 25 electoral votes remain uncalled after election night as Bush leads Gore by roughly 1,800 votes out of 6 million cast, triggering an automatic machine recount

On election night, major television networks called Florida for Al Gore at 7:49 PM, retracted the call, then called it for George W. Bush at 2:16 AM before retracting again — the first time a major state was miscalled twice in one night. Florida Statute § 102.141(4) mandated an automatic machine recount when the margin fell below 0.5%. With Bush leading by approximately 1,784 votes, the entire presidential election came down to a disputed recount in a single state.
