Obama announces DAPA executive action shielding 4 million undocumented immigrants courts block it

President Obama announces an executive action called Deferred Action for Parents of Americans (DAPA), which would shield approximately 4 million undocumented immigrants who are parents of U.S. citizens or permanent residents from deportation and grant them work authorization. Obama also expands DACA. Twenty-six Republican-led states immediately sue. A federal district court in Texas blocks DAPA before it takes effect. The Fifth Circuit upholds the injunction, and in 2016 the Supreme Court ties 4-4 in United States v. Texas, leaving the lower court's block in place. DAPA never takes effect.
