Federal court finds South Carolina congressional map an unconstitutional racial gerrymander

A three-judge federal district court panel ruled on January 6, 2023, that South Carolina state lawmakers had used race as the predominant factor in drawing SC-1, constituting an unconstitutional racial gerrymander. The court found the legislature moved approximately 30,000 Black voters out of SC-1 to reduce their electoral influence. The panel ordered South Carolina to redraw the district before the 2024 elections and issued a preliminary injunction blocking use of the existing map.
