Biden takes office as Trump sanctions remain pending negotiations

President Joe Biden is sworn in as 46th President. Despite campaign promises to rejoin the JCPOA, Biden does not immediately lift Trump's Iran sanctions, instead initiating indirect talks in Vienna aimed at restoring the 2015 deal. Comprehensive oil sanctions remain in effect throughout 2021-2024, limiting Iranian crude exports to roughly 500,000 to 2 million barrels per day depending on enforcement and waivers granted to Iraq and select allies.
