DHS gives ICE agents broader enforcement powers under a new immigration directive

The Department of Homeland Security issued a new enforcement directive on the first full day of Trump's second term, dramatically expanding ICE agent authority to conduct arrests in previously protected sensitive locations including churches, schools, and hospitals. The directive rescinded long-standing policies limiting enforcement near places of worship and education. DHS Secretary nominee Tom Homan announced the changes as part of a broader plan for the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.
