Supreme Court limits campaign spending rules in Buckley v. Valeo

On Jan. 30, 1976, the Supreme Court upheld federal contribution limits but struck down limits on independent expenditures in Buckley v. Valeo. The ruling created the basic constitutional split that still governs campaign finance: contributions can be limited, but independent political spending receives stronger First Amendment protection.
