Biden brokers 16-person prisoner swap with Russia largest since Cold War
President Biden announces a 16-person prisoner swap with Russia involving 8 countries, securing the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, former US Marine Paul Whelan, and 14 others detained in Russia and Belarus. In exchange, the US releases convicted Russian assassin Vadim Krasikov (held in Germany), Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout had been released earlier, and several other prisoners. Biden calls it "one of the most complex negotiations ever conducted." The swap includes citizens from the US, Germany, Poland, Slovenia, Norway, Sweden, and Belarus, and represents the largest East-West prisoner exchange since the Cold War.
