Trump Administration Ends TPS for 200,000 Salvadorans

The Trump administration announced on January 8, 2018, that it was terminating Temporary Protected Status for El Salvador, affecting approximately 200,000 Salvadoran immigrants who had lived legally in the United States for up to 17 years. Acting DHS Secretary Elaine Duke determined that the conditions that originally justified TPS — El Salvador''s 1980s civil war — no longer existed, despite the country''s high gang violence and poverty rates. TPS holders had until September 9, 2019, to leave or face deportation, with an estimated 192,000 U.S.-born children of TPS holders facing family separation.
