Jack Smith subpoenas phone metadata of eight Republican senators

Special counsel Jack Smith issued subpoenas to Verizon and AT&T on September 27, 2023, seeking call detail records — metadata showing who called whom, when, and for how long — for eight Republican senators as part of the Arctic Frost FBI investigation into the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack and the fake elector scheme. The subpoenas covered records dated from January 1, 2022 forward. Senators were not notified before the carriers received the subpoenas.
