US Navy SEALs kill Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad raid Obama announces operation live on national TV

President Obama authorizes and directs a classified special operations raid on a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, resulting in the death of Osama bin Laden, the founder of al-Qaeda and primary architect of the September 11, 2001 attacks. A team of 24 Navy SEALs flies from Afghanistan and kills bin Laden during a 40-minute raid code-named Operation Neptune Spear. Obama announces the operation from the White House East Room at 11:35 PM. The raid occurs without notification to the Pakistani government. Crowds gather at the White House and Ground Zero.
